Spider-Man 2 Sales Set New PlayStation Studios’ Record

On Monday morning, Sony announced that Spider-Man 2, recently launched, has secured the record for the quickest-selling PlayStation Exclusive game in history. As per the Sony’s statement, Spider-Man 2 sales were 2.5 million copies within its initial 24 hours of release.

UPDATE: Sony’s financial statements have revealed further details regarding the sales numbers of Spider-Man 2 in its first 11 days of release.

2.5 Million Copies Sold in 24 Hours

Sony’s 2.5 million copies sold include pre-orders and PS5 bundles, surpassing God of War Ragnarok’s record from November 2022. It’s worth mentioning that God of War Ragnarok was available on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 upon release, while Spider-Man 2 is currently exclusive to just the PlayStation 5.

Although the sales figures seem remarkable, it’s crucial to consider the methodology behind PlayStation’s record-keeping, which has raised some suspicions. Insider Gaming has pointed out that the time frame for each “record” keeps shifting in each record announcement from Sony.

PlayStation’s recent major releases have all set some sort of launch record. The original Spider-Man game set a three-day sales record in 2018, which was later surpassed by The Last of Us Part 2, selling 4 million copies in just two days. However, God of War Ragnarok outpaced both, selling an 5.1 million copies in only four days in 2022.

Judging the Spider-Man 2 sales as a massive success based solely on one day of numbers is a bit challenging. The fact that the game is exclusive to a single console suggests strong sales, but the decision by Sony to share only one day’s worth of sales data, in contrast to previous titles, does raise some questions.
