One of the biggest questions for the Resident Evil 4 Remake was whether you would be able to save the dog or not. Capcom hinted in the demo that you couldn’t by placing a dead wolf in a trap along the path, but they were bluffing. Below I will walk you through how to save the dog in Resident Evil 4 Remake.

Where is the Dog in RE4 Remake?

Capcom has changed up where the dog is located in the remake. Instead of encountering it in Chapter 1 of the game you now encounter it at the start of Chapter 3. Once you’ve gained control of Leon in the Village Chief’s Manor head downstairs and go outside. As you head towards the northwest gate you will hear a dog whimpering. Turn and go right to the north side of the house. Here you will find the dog in a trap.

Saving Versus Not Saving the Dog

When you encounter the dog you will have a choice to make, do you leave it in the trap, or do you free it? What you choose here does have a bit of an impact on a later interaction in the game. Freeing the dog from the trap causes it to appear during the El Gigante boss fight. The dogwill fight by your side and provides a distraction to the lumbering boss.

If you don’t free the dog during Chapter 3 you will not get the interaction during the boss fight. Instead you have to go it alone. This makes the fight more difficult to complete since you have El Gigante’s full attention.
