How to Get Married in Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley married to Emily.

In Stardew Valley the farmer starts their farming journey alone. As things progress through story the farmer can begin to develop relationships with the different inhabitants of the valley. Many of these relationships are only friendships by nature. Some, however, can be more than friendships. These romantic relationships, if taken far enough, can turn into marriages. Below you will find all the steps for how to get married in Stardew Valley.

1. Build a 10 Heart Relationship With a Marriage Candidate

To begin the process of marriage you need to first build up a friendship with either the Bachelor or Bachelorette of your choice. In the game there are a total of 6 Bachelors and 6 Bachelorettes for players to choose from. The possible marriage candidates in Stardew Valley are:

Bachelors

  • Alex.
  • Elliott.
  • Harvey.
  • Sam.
  • Sebastian.
  • Shane.

Bachelorettes

  • Abigail.
  • Emily.
  • Haley.
  • Leah.
  • Maru.
  • Penny.

Once you’ve decided on who you want to marry the next step is to raise your relationship with that person to 8 hearts. You raise this relationship by talking to the person each day, giving them gifts they like/love, taking them to the movies & buying snacks for them, and completing any delivery quests they have.

Upon reaching the 8 heart point with a marriage candidate your next step is to purchase the Bouquet from Pierre’s General Store for 200g. This special item, when given to your crush, changes their status to boyfriend or girlfriend. After The Bouquet is given you can build the relationship up to the 10 heart maximum.

2. Purchase the Mermaid’s Pendant and Use it to Propose

After you’ve reached the 10 heart limit with a bachelor or bachelorette, the next step requires purchasing a specific item that allows you to propose. This specific item is the Mermaids Pendant. The Mermaid’s Pendant is sold by Old Mariner at the Tidal Pools on the Beach during rainy days. Speak to this NPC when he appears and he will offer to sell you the item. The cost of the pendant is 5,000g.

Take the Mermaid Pendant you purchased and go to your marriage candidate. Give them the pendant to trigger the marriage process. The marriage ceremony takes place 3 days from the proposal day. The wedding day appears on the calendar with the Mermaid Pendant icon. You do not need to do anything, the marriage event takes place automatically once the day arrives.

3. Enjoy Married Life

After the marriage your spouse will move onto the farm. Here they will setup their own special room inside the farmhouse and a little area outside of it as well. When the spouse lives at the farm they may complete special chores including watering crops, feeding the animals, repairing broken fences, and giving the farmer breakfast or dinner meals.

The person you married appears as either your wife/husband on the relationship tab. Alongside becoming official, your relationship cap with your spouse grows to 14 heart. At the 12.5 hearts mark your spouse will give you a Stardrop. At the 14 hearts mark there is a heart event for players to witness.

Besides the above mentioned bonuses marriage allows the player to have children on the farm. If marriage is not for you there is an in-game divorce mechanic. Using this mechanic allows you to divorce your current spouse to pursue someone else.
