Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree Ymir & Jolán Quest Guide

Count Ymri on his throne in Elden Ring.

Ymir & Jolán are two NPCs player can meet in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree. These characters have an interesting questline players can complete for them that allows you to ring the bells at the Finger Ruins and earn some rewards. To help you complete this questline use our full Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree Ymir & Jolán quest guide below.

Note: Burning the Sealing Tree after defeating Messmer causes the majority of NPC quests in the DLC to come to an end. The Ymir & Jolán quest is an exception. It can be done before or after burning the the Sealing Tree without any negative effects.

Step 1: Meet Count Ymir and Get the Hole-Laden Necklace and Ruins Map (1st)

Visit the Cathedral of Manus Metyr to start this questline.

To begin this quest, first visit the Cathedral of Manus Metyr by traveling through Moorth Ruins (southeast of Shadow Keep) and Bonny Village.

Inside the cathedral, go to Count Ymir seated on the throne in the main big room. Speak with him to receive the Hole-Laden Necklace and Ruins Map, essential items needed to ring the bells at the different Finger Ruins.

Step 2: Sound the Hanging Bell in the Finger Ruins of Rhia

Now that we have the items, it’s time to go to the Finger Ruins of Rhia. To reach this location, head through the Creulean Coast and follow the path shown on the map above. Going this way you will eventually take you to the ruins.

In the ruins, go to the northern section where there is a large Hanging Bell. Approach this bell and interact with it when prompted. Ring the bell to receive the Crimson Seed Talisman +1.

Step 3: Return to Ymir to Get the Second Ruins Map

Upon sounding the bell head back to Ymir at the Cathedral of Manus Metyr. Speak to him again to receive the Ruins Map (2nd) and Beloved Stardust.

After talking to Ymir walk over and speak to the new character in the church named Knight Jolán by the pillar. Exhaust the dialogue with her until she dismisses you.

Step 4: Get the O Mother Gesture

To proceed with the next step of this quest, you need the O Mother emote. If you already have it, you can move on to Step 5. If not, head to Bonny Village now so we can get it.

In Bonny Village, go to the northernmost corner. You’ll find a statue by a tree with an item on it. Collect this item to acquire the O Mother Emote. Add the O Mother emote to your active emotes so we can use it in the next step.

Step 5: Use the O Mother Emote on Statue in Shadow Keep

Make your way to the Shadow Keep, Back Gate Site of Grace. If you’re not sure how to reach this location, use this helpful video guide. Once there, enter the southeastern room from the Site of Grace. Inside, you’ll find a statue that requires the O Mother emote to interact with. Stand in front of the statue and use the emote; this will cause the statue to move to the right, revealing a new passage.

This newly opened path leads to the northeast region of the Scaduview, where you can take a long path to the Finger Ruins of Dheo and another bell we need to sound.

Step 6: Sound the Hanging Bell in the Finger Ruins of Dheo

Follow this path to reach the Hanging Bell int eh Finger Ruins of Dheo.

To reach the Finger Ruins of Dheo and the Hanging Bell make your way as far east as you can. Once there go to the Hanging bell and ring it. Doing this earns you the Cerulean Seed Talisman +1 and allows us to move onto the next step.

Step 7: Speak to Ymir & Jolán Again

After ringing the second bell, return to Count Ymir at the Cathedral of Manus Metyr. Speak with him again to obtain the Ruins Map (3rd). Now is the time to purchase any spells you want from him, as he will disappear after the next step.

When you’re ready to continue, speak to Jolán and exhaust her dialogue options. Once you’ve done this, fast travel to the Cathedral of Manus Metyr Site of Grace to reset the area.

Step 8: Sound the Hanging Bell in the Finger Ruins of Miyr

Examining Count Ymir throne.
Examine the throne after Ymir leaves to reveal a secret passage to the Finger Ruins of Miyr.

After resetting the area, head back into the cathedral and go to where Count Ymir is usually found. You’ll notice he’s no longer there. Examine the throne and it will move and reveal a hidden ladder. Climb down the ladder to reach the Finger Ruins of Miyr.

Proceed forward in this area. Defeat Swordhand of Night Anna when she appears to obtain the Claws of Night. Continue moving ahead until you encounter the third and final Hanging Bell. When you’re prepared for a boss fight, ring the bell to be teleported to the arena.

Step 9: Defeat Metyr, Mother of Fingers

Metyr, Mother of Fingers boss.
Defat Metyr, Mother of Fingers to advance the quest.

Inside the boss arena, you will come face to face with Metyr, Mother of Fingers. To advance the questline, you need to defeat her. This is a tough fight, so a few suggestions to make it easier are:

  • Use Summons
  • Wield a max weapon
  • Be high level (+200)
  • Increase Scadutree Blessing
  • Increase Revered Spirit Ash Blessing

Upon defeating Metyr, you will receive the Remembrance of the Mother of Fingers, which you can turn into either the Staff of the Great Beyond or the Gazing Finger. Additionally, defeating this boss allows you to advance the questline, which is what we are here to do.

Step 10: Defeat Jolán and Count Ymir in the Cathedral of Manus Metyr

Return to the Cathedral of Manus Metyr. Enter the throne room area and interact with the throne. Upon interaction, Jolán will attack you. Defeat her, and then Count Ymir, Mother of Fingers will appear. Defeat him to acquire the following rewards:

  • Ymir’s Bell Bearing
  • Maternal Staff
  • High Priest Hat
  • High Priest Robe
  • High Priest Gloves
  • High Priest Garments

After receiving these rewards, you will have one final step remaining to secure an additional reward. This step involves assisting Jolán.

Step 11: Give Jolán the Iris of Grace or Occulation to Receive a Reward

Fast travel to the Cathedral of Manus Metyr to reload the area. Return to the throne room and find Jolán leaning against the pillar where she typically stands. Speak to her there. She mentions her inability to see. To solve this, bring her either the Iris of Grace or the Iris of Occultation.

Warning: You can only get one of the rewards from Jolán per playthrough.

The Iris you give determines the reward you receive. These items are also used in the Fire Knight Queelign questline. Check out that guide to see what the rewards are before you decide.

Iris of Grace Location & Reward

To find the Iris of Grace, travel to the Shadow Keep and reach the Storehouse, First Floor Site of Grace. From here, go west and head down using the elevator. Continue forward until you reach a large room with living jars. In this room there is an altar with the eye on it.

Once you’ve gotten this item you can give it to Jolán. Giving Jolán the Iris of Grace will reward you with the Jolán: Swordhand of Knight Jolán Ashen Spirits.

Iris of Occultation Location & Reward

To find the Iris of Occultation, travel to the Fort of Reprimand. When you enter the courtyard area of the fort head northeast and jump down the hole there. Walk forward into the basement and you will get attacked by a dual-wielding enemy. Defeat this enemy to get the eye.

Alternatively, there are two other Iris of Occultations located in the Realm of Shadows. One can be obtained from a Tree Spirit enemy on the ground level of the Church District after draining it. The second can be found in the tunnel leading to the Scadutree Base.

Once you’ve gotten this item you can give it to Jolán. Giving Jolán the Iris of Occultation will reward you with the Jolán: Sword of Night weapon.
