How to Unlock Terraforming in Animal Crossing New Horizons

When you start playing Animal Crossing New Horizons you will be unable to do any sort of island alteration. To reach the point where this game-play mechanic unlocks you need to beat the game (well beat as in have the credits roll). To do this you need to complete the following island projects:

Upon completion of Project K you will see the game’s end credits. After the credits Tom Nook will approach you at your house. Here he will give you the Island Designer app for your phone. Alongside this app you are able to buy land changing permits from the Residential Services building.

How to Terraform in Animal Crossing New Horizons

After you’ve unlocked both the Island Designer app and the land permits you can begin to terraform your island to do this you need to take the following steps:

  1. Open Island Designer App (outside). Wander around the island where you wish to do construction options to build things like paths.
  2. Purchase permits from the Nook Miles shop to unlock new construction options (cost 6k per).
  3. Use Island Designer App and permits as needed.

If you really want to get into the weeds on terraforming you should open the Island Designer App and access the manual there. This manual gives you pertinent information on path construction, permit usage, and cleanup services.
