How to Build Inclines in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

An incline built and placed.

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, unlocking new features to make island life easier is a key part of the game. One of the most useful upgrades you can unlock is the ability to build inclines, which let you climb cliffs without carrying a ladder everywhere. These inclines are permanent infrastructure projects that improve mobility and streamline your island design. If you’re ready to ditch the ladder and add some stylish ramps, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know about building inclines in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Step 1: Build the Shop for Timmy and Tommy

To unlock the ability to build inclines, you first need to advance the storyline. This process begins with constructing a shop for Timmy and Tommy. Here’s how to get started:

  1. Invite Blathers to Your Island
Progress the storyline until Blathers sets up his tent on your island.
  2. Trigger the Shop Quest
After Blathers has moved in, visit the Nook Tent. Timmy and Tommy will give you a quest to build their shop.
  3. Collect the Materials for the Shop
To build the shop, gather and donate the following materials:
    • 30x Hardwood
    • 30x Softwood
    • 30x Wood
    • 30x Iron Nuggets
  4. Place the Shop
Once you’ve gathered the materials, choose a location on your island to place the shop.

Completing the shop will unlock a new set of tasks from Tom Nook, which includes building three houses for new residents and constructing a bridge. Completing these projects is necessary to unlock infrastructure builds, including inclines.

Step 2: How to Build Inclines

Once you’ve unlocked the ability to construct infrastructure projects, you can start building inclines. Follow these steps:

  1. Visit Resident Services
Speak to Tom Nook at Resident Services and select the option for “Infrastructure.”
  2. Choose an Incline Style
Tom Nook offers a variety of incline styles to suit your island’s aesthetic. Here are the available options and their costs:
    • Natural Ramp – 98,000 Bells
    • Blue-Plank Ramp – 128,000 Bells
    • White-Plank Ramp – 128,000 Bells
    • Log Staircase – 168,000 Bells
    • Stone Staircase – 168,000 Bells
    • Brick Staircase – 198,000 Bells
    • Blue Steel Staircase – 228,000 Bells
    • Red Steel Staircase – 228,000 Bells
  3. Place the Incline
After selecting an incline style, you’ll be prompted to choose a location for it on your island. Once placed, the incline project will appear with a Gyroid construction assistant nearby.
  4. Fund the Incline
Pay for the incline by donating Bells to the Gyroid assistant. You can add the entire amount yourself or wait for contributions from other players on your island.
  5. Wait for Completion
After funding is complete, the incline will be built and ready for use the next day.

Managing and Removing Inclines

  • Demolishing an Incline: If you want to remove an incline, speak with Tom Nook at Resident Services. Select “Infrastructure,” then “Bridges/Inclines,” and finally “Demolish something.”
  • Incline Limit: Keep in mind that you can only have up to 8 inclines on your island at a time. Plan your placements carefully!
