How to Get the Grandmaster Griffin Armor in The Witcher 3

The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine introduced a whole new tier of armor known as Grandmaster. There are five armor sets available for upgrade, and to reach this coveted level, you must speak with the Grandmaster Armorer in Beauclair, the stylish capital of Toussaint. Once you meet him, your quest for the necessary diagrams to craft Grandmaster equipment is set in motion. This guide focuses on obtaining the Grandmaster Griffin Armor—a set celebrated not only for its superior protection and unique bonuses but also for the rich backstory it carries.
1. Finding the Schematics at Fort Ussar

Location: Fort Ussar (Eastern part of Toussaint)
What to Do:
- Explore the Ruins: The first three schematics for the Grandmaster Griffin set—covering items such as the Silver Sword and Gauntlets—are hidden within the ruins of Fort Ussar.
- Under the Stairs: Once inside, head under the stairs where you’ll find these diagrams waiting to be collected.
- Keep an Eye Out: Be aware that Slyzards patrol the area. You can either confront them or try to bypass the main encounters by approaching from the east, ensuring you don’t miss any hidden details in the environment.
2. Locating the Schematics at Mont Crane Castle
Location: Mont Crane Castle (Northwest of Fort Ussar)
What to Do:
- Follow the Report: After collecting the first trio of schematics, you’ll receive Captain Augustus Fierabras’ report directing you to Mont Crane Castle—a bandit-infested camp.
- Explore the Courtyard: Enter the castle’s courtyard and look for an illusionary wall instead of taking the usual route upstairs. This hidden wall leads you to a secret lower area of the castle.
- Activate the Portal: In the lower area, find a table with a crystal and locate a hidden switch behind a bookshelf. Activating this switch will open a portal—but be warned, it also alerts a group of bandits.
- Face the Golem: After clearing the bandits, step through the portal where you’ll encounter a Golem. Defeat it, then continue exploring to discover three sacks—each one contains a schematic needed for the Grandmaster Griffin gear.
3. Crafting the Grandmaster Griffin Set
Once all schematics are in your possession, return to the Grandmaster Armorer in Beauclair. Here, you’ll combine the diagrams with specific materials gathered from your adventures to craft each piece of the set. Below are the recipes for each component of the Grandmaster Griffin gear:

4. The Grandmaster Griffin Set Bonuses & Lore
Armor Class: Medium
Primary Benefits: Increased Sign intensity and robust protection from various types of damage.
Set Bonuses:
- 3-Piece Bonus:
“After using Stamina to cast a Sign in its standard mode, the next Sign cast within 3 seconds will be cast in standard mode without using Stamina.”
This bonus is perfect for enhancing your magical combat, allowing for a more fluid use of Signs. - 6-Piece Bonus:
“The size of Yrden traps is increased by 40%. While you are within a Yrden trap, stamina regeneration is increased by 5 per second, sign intensity is boosted by 100%, and damage is reduced by 20%.”
This powerful bonus can turn the tide in tougher battles by amplifying your defensive and offensive capabilities.
Lore & Aesthetic Appeal:
The Grandmaster Griffin set isn’t just about numbers—it’s an iconic symbol of Toussaint’s legendary craftsmanship. The design reflects the noble and fierce spirit of the griffin, a creature of both myth and majesty. Wearing this armor not only improves Geralt’s abilities but also connects him to the deep-rooted traditions of a land steeped in chivalry and mystery.
5. Using Console Commands (Optional)
For those who prefer an alternate route—or simply want to experiment—the Grandmaster Griffin gear can be obtained via console commands (through mods, as the vanilla game doesn’t support this). Use the following commands at your own discretion:
- additem(“Gryphon Pants 5”)
- additem(“Gryphon Boots 5”)
- additem(“Gryphon Gloves 5”)
- additem(“Gryphon Armor 4”)
- additem(“Gryphon School steel sword 4”)
- additem(“Gryphon School silver sword 4”)
Caution:
Using console commands can affect your game’s balance and disable achievements, so it’s best reserved for those who are curious or looking to experiment.
There are more Grandmaster sets you can acquire. See how to get the Grandmaster Ursine and Grandmaster Feline sets guides for details on acquiring those sets for yourself. Additionally, in Update 4.02, players can get two new sets: the Forgotten Wolf set and the White Tiger of the West set.
