Mantis Village | Hollow Knight Guide
Mantis Village is a sub-area players have to visit in the Fungal Wastes. This location is home to the Mantis Claw ability and the Mantis Lord bosses. To help you complete this area I’ve put together the guide below. Use it to make Mantis Village a breeze!
Mantis Village Map
Mantis Village is a small area that is fairly straightforward to navigate. The map above gives the general layout and highlights the location of the only Bench there.
Where to Get the Mantis Claw
From the entrance make your way to the left. At the end you will find a lever you can hit. This opens a gate on the floor above. Head up to that floor and make your way to the left.
Head up to the floor above. On this floor make your way left. Go up using the platforms at the end. You will see a shining item on the ground in a pile of hooks.
Go over to the item and pick it up. You will unlock the Mantis Claw ability. This ability allows you to wall jump.
Use wall jump to return to the floor below. You can leave Mantis Village now and go to the City of Tears or you can explore more and fight a fun optional boss called the Mantis Lords.
How to Reach the Mantis Lords
Now that we can wall jump we can explore more of the Mantis Village. In the middle there is a shaft you can go up. Go up this shaft and head to the right.
Complete the platforming section with the spikes using wall jump and dash. At the end you will reach a lever. Hit the lever. A large door will open in the middle of the village. Drop down it to reach a room below.
In the room below there are a bunch of locked gates and levers. Work your way around the room opening the various gates. Once you open the gate in the bottom right, you will gain access to the Mantis Lords boss arena.
To start the fight walk in front of the Mantis Lords and push Challenge. This will begin the boss fight.
Mantis Lords Boss Fight
This is a challenging fight, so leaving it for later when you have more upgrades is a smart move. If you choose to fight them now, expect a few practice runs to learn their patterns.
The fight has two phases: Phase 1 against a single Mantis Lord, followed by Phase 2 against the remaining two Lords at once. They move fast and teleport around the arena, requiring quick reflexes.
Use Dash to evade their incoming attacks and counterattack during their recovery windows. The core moveset stays identical throughout the fight—Phase 2 simply doubles the pace by having two Lords attack in tandem.
Mantis Village Treasure Room & Bench
Upon defeating the Mantis Lords, the warriors throughout the Mantis Village will de-aggro and bow to you, allowing you to explore the area safely without the risk of being attacked.
You also gain access to the Mantis treasure room located to the right of the boss arena. Inside, you will find a Bench, several Geo chests, a Hallownest Seal (which you can sell), and the Mark of Pride Charm.
What Does the Mark of Pride Charm Do?
Mark of Pride significantly increases the reach of your Nail, making it much easier to hit enemies and bosses from a safer distance. It costs 3 Notches and is widely considered one of the best combat charms in the game.
How to Get to the City of Tears
Once you have the Mantis Claw, you can access the next main area, the City of Tears. To get there from the Fungal Wastes, head back to the large room where you previously saw Hornet run off.
Use your Dash and Mantis Claw wall-jump to navigate across the high platforms and spikes. As you go there is a lever about halfway below you that extends the bridge. Hit it to extend the bridge out. Do the same at the end.
At the end of the pathway, you will reach a massive stone statue. Insert the City Crest (dropped by the False Knight) into the statue to unlock the gate. The gate will close behind you, so keep that in mind before entering. When ready enter the City of Tears.
