Assassin’s Creed Odyssey – How to Solve the Sphinx’s Riddles

As you progress through the main story in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, you’ll eventually encounter a point where mythology and reality merge. At this stage, you’ll be tasked with retrieving four artifacts from mythical creatures to progress the Atlantis storyline. One of these creatures is the legendary Sphinx, which challenges you with a riddle-based trial.
This guide will walk you through where to find the Sphinx, how to start the challenge, and the answers to all possible riddles so you can claim your rewards.
Where to Find the Sphinx
You can find the Sphinx statue in the Scorched Rolling Plains of Boeotia. However, before you can begin the challenge, you must complete a side objective:
- Defeat the Alpha Lion – Nearby, you’ll find an Alpha Lion that you need to kill.
- Obtain the Medallion – Once the lion is defeated, you’ll receive a Medallion, which is required to activate the Sphinx’s trial.
- Activate the Challenge – Take the Medallion to the Sphinx’s statue to begin the encounter.
The Sphinx’s Challenge: Answering 3 Riddles
Once you place the Medallion in the statue, the lifeless Sphinx will disappear, and the real Sphinx will appear in its place. She will speak to you and present a challenge: answer three riddles correctly to prove your wisdom.
If you answer correctly, you’ll receive powerful rewards. However, if you get even one answer wrong, you’ll fail and be instantly killed, forcing you to try again.

The Sphinx will ask three riddles randomly from the list below:

- Answer: The moon.

- “I create my lair with earthen string, and dispatch my prey with a biting sting.”

- “What can run, but never walks; has a mouth, but never talks; has a head, but never weeps; has a bed, but never sleeps?”
- Answer: A river.
- “I’m alive, but without breath; I’m as cold in life as in death; I’m never thirsty, though I always drink.”
