In Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield you will spend a ton of time catching various Pokemon you encounter in the world. These Pokemon are all named after their species. If you don’t want to simply have a Pikachu, fear not as you can rename your Pokemon. Check below to learn how to rename Pokemon in Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield.

Give Pokemon Nickname When Caught

The first way to rename a Pokemon is to give them a nickname when you catch them. This occurs every time you catch a Pokemon. You will be asked if you wish to give your Pokemon a nickname. Select yes and input whatever nickname your heart desires. With the nickname in place you will see that name whenever you see the Pokemon.

If you named your Pokemon something you wish to change in the future you can do so by visiting the coffee NPC in Poke Centers (left side). Approach the NPC and speak with him. Ask him to rate a nickname then select the Pokemon you wish to rename. Doing this prompts the man to give you his opinion on the name. He will then suggest you can give it a better name. Select yes to access the naming screen. Input whatever name you wish to change your Pokemon’s name to.

    I tried renaming a japanese pokemon and he said something about it being a really good nickname and I couldn’t change it.
