How to Complete the Great Colored Carp Questline in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Sekiro’s underwater exploration and unique questlines offer a wealth of secrets, and one of the most intriguing is the Great Colored Carp quest. Completing this quest earns you the Great White Whisker key item and ultimately contributes to unlocking an optional ending. This guide will walk you through each step in an easy-to-follow manner.
1. Reach Fountainhead Palace and Locate the NPC
- Travel to Fountainhead Palace: Progress through the game until you reach Fountainhead Palace, which is situated on a large body of water.
- Find the Great Sakura Idol: Locate the Great Sakura Idol within the palace grounds.
- Locate the Half-Sunk House: Run and jump into the lake near the idol. Look to the left for a half-sunken house and speak with the NPC inside to learn about the Great Colored Carp.
Tip: If you open the palace gates, you’ll trigger a brief resolution to the NPC’s story—open the gates, rest at the idol, then re-enter the palace to witness her fighting enemies before she dies.
2. Navigate to the Feeding Grounds
- Stay in the Lake: After speaking with the NPC, remain in the water.
- Find the Cave: Head behind the building where the NPC was and search for a cave in the left corner.
- Avoid the Charging Carp: Carefully navigate through the cave, dodging the Great Colored Carp as it charges.
- Surface Safely: Exit the sunken building at the end of the cave, then use your hookshot to climb up and reach the Palace Grounds Sculptor’s Idol.
- Reach the Feeding Grounds Idol: From the palace, exit through the far door, turn right, and climb to the roof using your hookshot. Continue along the roof until you find a tree you can use to jump down to a raised platform, and finally drop down to the Feeding Grounds idol.
3. Acquire Truly Precious Bait from Pot Nobles
- Visit Pot Nobles: At the Feeding Grounds, speak with the two Pot Nobles—Harunga (located in Hirata Estates) and Koremori (located in Fountainhead Palace).
- Spend Scales: Purchase Truly Precious Bait from both merchants. Note that if you complete the Great Colored Carp quest before buying the bait, check with the merchant who transforms into the carp—they will offer both inventories.
4. Feed the Great Colored Carp
- Ring the Bell: Return to the Feeding Grounds idol and ring the bell to summon the Great Colored Carp.
- Choose Your Bait:
- Harunga’s Truly Precious Bait: Using this bait will result in Koremori’s death, and Harunga will inherit his inventory. Harunga then transforms into a red-eyed carp; interact with his pot to obtain a Lapis Lazuli.
- Koremori’s Truly Precious Bait: Using this bait will cause Harunga to die, and Koremori inherits his inventory. Koremori transforms into a red-eyed carp in the water below his pot; interact with his pot to get a Lapis Lazuli.
5. Retrieve the Great White Whisker
- Head to Guardian Ape’s Watering Hole: After feeding the carp, move to the Guardian Ape’s Watering Hole idol.
- Collect the Great White Whisker: In the center of this area, you’ll find the corpse of the Great Colored Carp. Examine the face to pick up the Great White Whisker.
6. Use the Great White Whisker
- Return to the Feeding Grounds: Go back to the Feeding Grounds idol and speak with the NPC who remains there.
- Present the Whisker: Give the Great White Whisker to the NPC, who will reward you with Divine Grass.
- Final Steps: Rest at the idol, then return to the NPC’s location. He will have died, and you can loot his corpse using the corpse vacuum to obtain 4 Treasure Carp Scales.
Completing the Great Colored Carp questline not only rewards you with the Great White Whisker key item but also provides valuable items such as Divine Grass and Treasure Carp Scales. This quest adds depth to Sekiro’s lore and unlocks part of the optional ending. Follow this guide carefully to ensure you don’t miss any important steps.
