Unlock and Craft the Axe

Before you can start gathering Iron Ore you first need to get the right tool for the job. The tool you are looking for is the axe. To unlock the axe you need to get the recipe from Tom Nook. This can be done by giving him two types of bugs. Once you’ve done this you can craft an axe with the following materials:

The Iron Ore material are one of the central crafting items you will want to stockpile in Animal Crossing New Horizons. This material can be found through one main source:

  • Drop off the boulders when hit by axe.

When you encounter a boulder you wish to chop simply equip your axe and use it on the boulder. When you hit the boulder it will drop 3x types of materials. Pick up the dropped materials using Y.

Be sure to have plenty of this material available to you as it is useful in many of the crafting recipes in the game. While out and about be sure to grab this item off the ground whenever you see it.
