Red Dead Redemption 2: The Ultimate Legendary Animal Hunting & Rewards Guide
Hunting in Red Dead Redemption 2 is a masterclass in open-world immersion. While tracking standard game keeps Arthur Morgan’s camp fed and your pockets lined with casual pocket change, the real challenge lies in hunting the 16 Legendary Animals. These one-of-a-kind, mythical beasts boast unique behaviors, pristine pelts, and rare materials required to craft the game’s most powerful passive upgrades.
To save you from jumping between disconnected forums, wikis, and maps, we have consolidated the entire hunting pipeline into a single, definitive guide. Below, you’ll find every legendary territory map coordinate, all hidden Trapper camp locations, complete garment recipe lists, and the core tracking strategies needed to achieve 100% completion.
What Are Legendary Animals in RDR2?
Legendary Animals are unique, one-of-a-kind specimens of various wildlife species that roam the open world of Red Dead Redemption 2. Unlike standard game, which spawns dynamically with randomized attributes, there is only one of each Legendary Animal per playthrough. Once killed, skinned, or tracked down, they are permanently checked off your progression log.
These mythical creatures are distinguished by their distinct visual profiles—often featuring rare albino coats, larger physical sizes, or unique tracking tracks.
Why You Should Hunt Them
Hunting Legendary Animals is crucial if you want to maximize your stats and gear capabilities:
- Pristine Materials for the Fence: Every Legendary Animal drops unique body parts (such as teeth, claws, or antlers) when skinned. You take these items to any Fence vendor to craft Talismans and Trinkets. These items grant permanent passive buffs to your gameplay, such as increasing your Dead Eye duration, slowing down weapon degradation, or boosting the quality of standard pelts.
- Token Pelts for the Trapper: Their hides are used as exclusive crafting currencies at the Trapper to unlock the game’s most intricate and prestigious clothing sets.
- 100% Game Completion: To achieve the coveted 100% Completion milestone in your pause menu, you must track, skin, and log at least five Legendary Animals into your Compendium.
How to Start Hunting Legendary Animals in RDR2
You cannot simply ride out into the frontier and find these mythical beasts immediately after stepping foot in Horseshoe Overlook. The legendary hunting mechanic is locked behind a specific story milestone, requiring a physical item before the tracking system activates.
Step 1: Unlock the Legendary Animal Map
To kick off your hunting career, progress through Chapter 2 until Hosea Matthews offers the mission “Exit Eagerly Pursued by a Bruised Ego.”
This mission serves as your official tutorial to big-game hunting as you track the Legendary Bharati Grizzly Bear through Grizzlies East. Once the mission concludes, Hosea will hand Arthur a hand-drawn Legendary Animal Map.
To view this map at any time:
- Open your Satchel (hold Right on the D-Pad).
- Navigate to the Documents tab.
- Select Maps and open the Legendary Animal Map.
You do not need to keep this map open to hunt. It serves as a visual hint sheet; the actual hunting mechanics are fully passive once the mission is complete.
Step 2: Triggering the In-Game Spawn
Once you know the general vicinity of a target from your sketch map, physically ride to that location. When you cross the invisible boundary into the creature’s domain, two things will happen:
- A text prompt will pop up in the top-left corner: “You have entered legendary animal territory…”
- A black-and-white silhouette of the animal wearing a small crown will permanently appear on your main map screen.
Step 3: Inspecting the Three Clues
Legendary Animals will not simply walk across your path. They are hidden until you successfully track them down using your survival skills.
- Activate Eagle Eye (L3 + R3). Instead of looking for normal blue tracking scent lines, scan the environment for a bright glowing yellow plume rising from the ground.
- Ride over to this plume and press the prompt to Inspect the clue (this will be dung, fur, broken branches, or blood).
- Once inspected, a dotted track line will appear. Follow this line using Eagle Eye to locate the second glowing yellow plume, and then the third.
- Immediately after inspecting the third clue, the Legendary Animal will physically spawn into the world just ahead of you. Equip your heaviest weapon, fill your Dead Eye meter, and prepare for the fight.
Where to Find Every Legendary Animal in RDR2
There are 16 Legendary Animals scattered across the map (10 available to Arthur starting in Chapter 2, 3 unlocked through later chapters, and 3 exclusive to the New Austin Epilogue region).
If you open the hand-drawn map in your satchel, you will only see 14 sketches. Your game isn’t bugged—the paper sketch simply condenses the New Austin desert region and completely omits the two ultimate endgame targets: the Chapter 4-locked Bullgator and the Master Hunter 9-gated Giaguaro Panther.
All 16 will properly appear with unique crown icons on your main pause-menu map the moment you physically enter their respective territories.
Legendary Animals Locations & Availability Table
| Legendary Animal | Map Region/Territory | Unlock Availability Milestone | Core Hunting Strategy & Quick Tips |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bharati Grizzly Bear | O’Creagh’s Run, Grizzlies East | Chapter 2 (During or after “Exit Eagerly Pursued by a Bruised Ego”) | Introduced as a tutorial. You can kill it during Hosea’s mission or return to its den later if you choose to retreat. |
| White Bison | Lake Isabella, Grizzlies West | Chapter 2 (Available immediately) | Spawns along the snow-covered northern shoreline. Use Eagle Eye ($L3 + R3$) to spot its glowing track lines against the blinding snow. |
| Buck | Northwest of Strawberry, Big Valley | Chapter 2 (Available immediately) | High Priority Target. Roams Willets Ridge. Its antler crafts a Fence trinket that permanently upgrades standard pelt qualities. |
| Beaver | Elysian Pool, Roanoke Ridge | Chapter 2 (Available immediately) | Found near the water’s edge south of the pool. Keep a fast Repeater or Rifle ready, as it will quickly dive into deep water if spooked. |
| Moose | Brandywine Drop, Roanoke Ridge | Chapter 2 (Available immediately) | Located in the extreme northeastern corner of the map. Tracks along the forested riverbanks near the massive waterfall. |
| Ram | Cattail Pond, Valentine | Chapter 2 (Available immediately) | Frequents the steep, rocky ridges and open hills directly west of the pond. Approach from downwind so it doesn’t catch your scent. |
| White Boar | Bluewater Marsh, Lemoyne | Chapter 2 (Available immediately) | Located in the damp bayou wetlands north of Saint Denis. Keep an eye out for standard alligators lurking in the immediate tracking area. |
| Coyote | Scarlett Meadows, Lemoyne | Chapter 2 (Available immediately) | Roams the dry, brush-heavy hills northwest of Rhodes. It is fast and skittish; pack a scoped rifle to drop it from a distance. |
| Fox | Mattock Pond, Lemoyne | Chapter 2 (Available immediately) | Tucked into the dense, managed woodlands just north of the Rhodes settlement clearing. |
| Elk | Fort Wallace, Cumberland Forest | Chapter 2 (Available immediately) | Concentrated heavily in the deep woods directly east of the military fort lines. |
| Bullgator | Bayou Nwa, Lemoyne | Chapter 4 Lock (Available after completing “Country Pursuits”) | A massive, highly lethal predator that spawns in the marsh waters south of Lagras. It takes massive damage—bring explosive slugs or high-velocity rifle rounds. |
| Wolf | Cotorra Springs, Ambarino | Chapter 6 Lock (Available at the start of the chapter) | Aggressive predator roaming the volcanic geyser fields along the northern train tracks. Be ready for a potential immediate charge. |
| Giaguaro Panther | Bolger Glade, Lemoyne | Master Hunter 9 Lock (Progression barrier) | The Ultimate Hunt. Will not spawn until you successfully clear the first 9 Master Hunter Challenges. Blindingly fast and highly aggressive; abuse Dead Eye the moment it appears. |
| Cougar | Gaptooth Ridge, New Austin | Epilogue Lock (Post-game territory) | Highly aggressive apex predator lurking in the western desert hills. Keep your Dead Eye core full and carry a loaded Shotgun. |
| Pronghorn | Rio Del Lobo Rock, New Austin | Epilogue Lock (Post-game territory) | Roams the open desert cliffs south of Armadillo. Incredibly skittish; crouch-walk and approach slowly from downwind. |
| Tatanka Bison | Hennigan’s Stead, New Austin | Epilogue Lock (Post-game territory) | Found roaming the expansive, flat desert plains southeast of MacFarlane’s Ranch. Easy to spot due to its massive size. |
Where to Find the Trapper (All 5 Locations)
Once you successfully fell a Legendary Animal and skin it, your standard town butchers won’t know what to do with it. To turn your hard-earned prize into high-end clothing, you must take it to the Trapper.
The Trapper is a mobile, specialized wilderness merchant marked on your map by a paw print icon. He moves between five distinct locations across the frontier, so you will want to use fast travel when you can.
| Trapper Location | Region & Territory | Best Proximity Access | Map Landmarks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saint Denis Market | Bayou Nwa, Lemoyne | Saint Denis Fast Travel | A permanent indoor storefront located on the far eastern side of the city’s market square. |
| Riggs Station Hill | Giant’s Basin, West Elizabeth | Riggs Station Train Stop | Perched on a scenic, wooded hill directly northeast of the train platform steps. |
| Roanoke Ridge Wilderness | Roanoke Ridge, New Hanover | Annesburg / Van Horn | Set up on a rocky ridge northeast of Elysian Pool, directly west of the Brandywine Drop waterfall. |
| Big Valley Outpost | Big Valley, West Elizabeth | Strawberry | Found on the far western wilderness border, near the safe house clearing along the upper trails of the Dakota River. |
| MacFarlane’s Ridges | Hennigan’s Stead, New Austin | MacFarlane’s Ranch | Settled along the cliffside ridges directly southwest of the main ranch properties (Epilogue only). |
Don’t Panic If You Lose a Pelt: If you are ambushed by bounty hunters or accidentally ride your horse off a cliff while carrying a Legendary Pelt, it is not permanently lost.
While you will forfeit the immediate cash payout from selling it by hand, the game mechanics automatically transfer the pelt directly to the Trapper’s crafting bench inventory after 24 in-game hours so you don’t lose the crafting opportunity.
Legendary Animals Trapper Unlocks

The legendary alligator appeared to me during chapter 4. And 8 rounds of slug bullets from a semi automatic shotgun didn’t do the job!!! It appears on the map so went straight back and so far no sign. Here’s hoping it returns. Thanks for the help you’ve made a legendary game even better with your guide.
Another notification :
You have entered a legendary animal territory. This animal has recently left the area and will not return for some time.
Or something along those lines
Be mindful. If ur in legendary area and a perfect cougar strolls by, and of course it’s u or him, plus u want that pelt…well, that legendary creature has hit the bricks at the sound of gunfire.
It is a legend cuz it knows when to run
?
On Red Dead Redemption on the map there’s a X on Legend moose on the map what should I do
It means that you have already hunted it
On my map my Legendary Bear and Elk are not “X’d off” on my main map like the rest of the animals. they are drawn but not Crossed off with his pencil per say. Does this mean I didn’t get it? I having issues getting the elk.
I tried to kill the legendary beat, but I died on my first attempt and now I can’t find it. What should I do?
Weirdest thing… So i killed/skinned and sold my Legendary Bighorn Ram pelt and carcass to the trapper. ???
That was a week ago give or take a few irl days. Tonight im playing and i shoot a Bighorn Ram, skin it and stow the carcass on Snowflake (My ?). I check the horse cargo to see if my Buck trinket did its job and made it a “perfect” opposed to a “good”. I was happy to see it infact made it perfect. Then as i was making my way down the mountain, i got out to check out a cabin. When i was looking through my satchel on the horse to fill up on food/meds etc i accidentally scrolled past the horse’s cargo tab and didnt really understand what i was looking at. My “perfect” Bighorn Ram carcass had powered up to Super Saiyan 4. Lol jk. But it did change from a perfect carcass to a legendary… Just wondering if anyone else has experianced the same thing with the ram or ant other legendary animals for that matter?
I can’t hunt the buck no matter how many times I leave the area there is still too much activity what should I do
same. I’ve been trying for over an hour now. super annoying
I found I had to leave the area, go to town and sleep in the hotel. Sometimes it would take doing this multiple before I could hunt it.
If there are predatory animal sounds in the area or a gang camp nearby, then it wont show up. There should be some roars you could hear, find and kill the gang and the source of the roar. For me it was a black bear. After i killed it a lot of bucks and horses started to spawn in the area
I had trouble with this but finally got it. Had to kill a cougar and outlaws. Then I found the three clues and then just hunted. Finally got him.
I dont have the animal map….???? Why
Same!!! what’s up?
What if you killed one but its lost in the Water, so like i cant skin them and dont know what to do.
Can i maybe come back again and kill them again or something like that?
You should get a message saying you abandoned the Legendary Skin and to pick it up at either the Trapper/Fence. This happened to me with the Legendary Boar skin.
