Unlocking the Fishing Rod

Before you can purchase specialized fishing bait and lures, you must first unlock the fishing rod. This becomes available after completing the “A Fisher of Men” mission in Chapter 2, where you accompany Jack to fish. After this mission, you can access the fishing rod from your inventory.

How to Use Bait and Lures Effectively

The key to successful fishing in Red Dead Redemption 2 is using the correct bait and lure for the type of fish you’re targeting. Different fish species prefer different bait, and using the right one significantly increases your chances of catching them. This is especially important when trying to catch legendary fish, which require specific types of bait and lures.

  1. Match the Water Type: Use the correct lure for the body of water you’re fishing in. For example, use a Lake Lure for lakes, a River Lure for rivers, and a Swamp Lure for swampy areas.
  2. Choose the Right Bait: You can use various types of bait to attract specific fish. Herbivore Bait is best for herbivorous fish, while Predator Bait is designed to attract carnivorous species.
  3. Legendary Fish: If you’re looking to catch legendary fish, you’ll need to use the Special Lures for lakes, rivers, and swamps. These lures are critical for attracting the rarest fish in the game.

Additional Tips for Fishing Success

  • Stock Up on Bait: Bait is consumed with each cast, and you can lose it if a fish escapes. To avoid running out, stock up before heading out on your fishing trip.
  • Legendary Fish: To find legendary fish, you’ll need to head to specific locations on the map where these fish are known to spawn. Make sure you’re equipped with the right lures and bait before going after them.

Unlocking Special Lures

If you’ve already unlocked the fishing rod, there’s still the possibility of unlocking special lures. These can be purchased from the Bait & Tackle Shop, but you may need to complete additional missions or activities to access them. Some players have reported needing to visit a stranger’s shack southeast of Flatneck Station to unlock full access to the bait and lures inventory.

Fishing is one of the many relaxing side activities in Red Dead Redemption 2, and getting the right bait and lures is crucial to your success. By visiting the Bait & Tackle Shop in Saint Denis, stocking up on bait and lures, and using them effectively, you’ll be well on your way to catching both common and legendary fish.

I have a fishing pole but I did not get it through the mission of taking Jack fishing. Would that be the reason all the bait and lures are locked at the General Stores? Also, when I go to the bait shop in LaGras, only the hunting bait is available, no fishing bait. Do I have to do anything to have the fishing bait appear there?
