Elden Ring Margit’s Shackle Guide

Elden Ring boss Margit stunned with the Margit's Shackle item.

Margit’s Shackle is one of the most unique and strategic items you can use in Elden Ring. A reusable tool with a fascinating effect, it can dramatically change the tide of your battle against Margit, the Fell Omen. Whether you’re struggling with this formidable foe or simply looking to explore every advantage the game offers, this guide will explain everything you need to know about Margit’s Shackle, including how to obtain and use it.

Where to Get Margit’s Shackle

To obtain Margit’s Shackle, you’ll need to encounter one of the Soulsborne series’ most iconic returning NPCs: Patches. Here’s how to find Patches and purchase the shackle:

1. Head to Murkwater Cave

Murkwater Cave is a small dungeon located in Limgrave, nestled in the northeastern section of the Murkwater River. To reach it, follow the river upstream until you spot the cave entrance along the cliffs.

Inside the cave, you’ll encounter a treasure chest that, when opened, triggers a surprise boss fight with the infamous Patches.

2. Kill or Spare Patches

Upon opening the treasure chest, Patches will ambush you, initiating a fight. During the battle, lower his health to about half, and he will surrender.

If you choose to kill him, you’ll receive his bell bearing, which allows you to access his inventory later through the Twin Maiden Husks in Roundtable Hold.

Alternatively, if you spare him, Patches will set up shop inside Murkwater Cave, where you can trade with him directly.

3. Purchase Margit’s Shackle

You can buy Margit’s Shackle for 5,000 Runes.

After you’ve fought Patches and decided his fate, you can access his store based on your choice. If you spared him, he will set up shop in Murkwater Cave. If you killed him, you can access his inventory through the Twin Maiden Husks in Roundtable Hold using the bell bearing you obtained.

Regardless of your decision, be sure to purchase Margit’s Shackle from Patches’ inventory for 5,000 Runes. This item will be added to your inventory, allowing you to use it later in your adventure.

What Does Margit’s Shackle Do?

Here’s the official item description:

“A fetish bathed in golden magic. Shackles were used to bind the accursed people called the Omen, and these ones were made to keep a particular Omen under strictest confinement. Though faint, the shackles still retain vestiges of power—enough to trap the once-bound Margit on earth, if only for a short time.”

Margit’s Shackle is a tool you can use during your fight against Margit, the Fell Omen. When activated, it temporarily binds Margit to the ground, leaving him vulnerable and giving you a precious window to attack.

This item’s effect is similar to the Tiny Music Box from Bloodborne, which had a comparable impact in the fight against Father Gascoigne.

How to Use Margit’s Shackle

Using Margit’s Shackle in battle is simple but requires strategic timing:

  1. Equip the Shackle: Ensure Margit’s Shackle is equipped in your consumables slot.
  2. Trigger the Effect: During the fight with Margit, activate the item to force him to the ground. This creates a large opening to unleash your attacks.
  3. Use It Strategically: You can use the shackle multiple times during the fight, giving you repeated opportunities to go on the offensive.

It’s important to note that Margit’s Shackle only works during the first phase of the fight. Once Margit transitions into his second, more aggressive phase, the shackle will no longer affect him.

Why You Should Use Margit’s Shackle

If you’re having trouble defeating Margit, this item is a game-changer. It allows you to control the fight, creating breathing room to heal, buff, or deliver high-damage combos.

For newer players or those struggling with Margit’s powerful attacks, Margit’s Shackle is a must-have tool to level the playing field.
