To unlock the axe you need to get the recipe from Tom Nook. This can be done by giving him two types of bugs. Once you’ve done this you can craft an axe with the following materials:
- 5x Tree Branches.
- 1x Stone.

- Drop off trees when hit with axe. Random as to what type of wood drops.
When you encounter a Tree you wish to chop simply equip your axe and use it on the tree. When hit the tree will drop 3x types of wood. Pick up the dropped wood using Y.
