The final update for Terraria is out now and with it comes a new mode called Journey which allows you to tweak various game settings. These settings range from simple things like weather to more complicated ones like enemy spawn rates and difficulty. To help you get started in this new mode use our how to start Journey mode in Terraria 1.4 guide below.

IMPORTANT: Be sure you have Terraria 1.4 downloaded before venturing further in this post. Without it the Journey mode will not appear in your game.

How Do You Start Journey Mode?

Note: Journey mode Characters can only be used in Journey mode. No exceptions.

To start Journey mode make your way into Terraria and start a new game. On the character creation screen (the one you see above) you will see the different types of modes you can select: Journey, Classic, Mediumcore, and Hardcore. Since we want to play Journey mode select this option.

After the Journey mode Character is created you will advance to the World creation screen. On this screen you will want to select Journey from the different difficulty options available to you. Once you have both a Journey mode Character and Journey mode World created you will be able to start your new Terraria adventure.

Inside Journey mode you will notice a number of new additions and a slew of customization options you can play with to tweak settings just the way you like them. This flexibility allows returning players and newcomers to experience the game in new ways. Be sure to play around with the settings and most importantly have fun.
