How to Change Outfits in Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 offers a vast, immersive open world where you can live your cowboy fantasy, and part of that experience includes outfitting Arthur Morgan to match your personal style. Whether you’re heading into a battle, riding through the wilderness, or just taking in the sights, Arthur’s appearance plays a key role in your experience. This guide will walk you through all the ways to change Arthur’s outfit, including where to find the wardrobe and how to equip various items to personalize your look.
Unlocking the Wardrobe System
Before you can change Arthur’s clothes, you need to complete Chapter 1 of the game. This chapter serves as a prologue and introduces you to the basics of gameplay, but it takes about 2 hours to finish. Once you’ve completed Chapter 1, you’ll unlock the ability to access the wardrobe and start customizing Arthur’s look.
What You’ll Need to Know:
- Chapter 1 Completion: You can change outfits only after completing the tutorial phase at the end of Chapter 1.
- Access to the Wardrobe: You will have access to the wardrobe system in your camp after Chapter 1, and in every town via the hotels you stay in.
Changing Outfits at Camp
The easiest and most accessible way to change Arthur’s clothes is by using the Wardrobe in your camp.
Steps to Change Outfits in Your Camp:
- Go to Your Tent: Inside the camp, look for your tent. Near your tent, you’ll find a wardrobe icon. Approach it and interact with it to open the wardrobe.
- Select Your Outfit: From the wardrobe, you can choose from a variety of pre-made outfits or mix and match individual clothing pieces.
- Individual Clothing Items: If you prefer to customize individual items, you can select:
- Hats
- Coats
- Vests
- Shirts
- Pants
- Suspenders
- Chaps
- Boots
- Spurs
- Masks
- Bandanas
- Neckwear
- Gloves
- Weapon Equipment
- Satchels
- Personalize Your Look: You can modify certain items, like rolling up sleeves or opening collars, for added style.
Once you’ve created an outfit you like, you can save it to quickly equip it later.
Changing Outfits at Hotels and Lodgings
If you’re away from camp, you can still change outfits by renting a room at any of the towns’ hotels. This method gives you the freedom to adjust Arthur’s clothing without having to travel back to camp.
How to Change Outfits at Hotels:
- Rent a Room: In any town, look for the local hotel. Enter the building and rent a room for the night.
- Access the Wardrobe: Once inside your room, you’ll find the wardrobe. It works the same way as the wardrobe in your camp.
- Customize Your Outfit: Use the wardrobe to change Arthur’s clothing to suit the current environment or your personal taste.
Changing Outfits from Your Horse
Your horse acts as a portable storage system for outfits. This allows you to store multiple outfits for different occasions and swap them while out on the road. You can store up to three outfits on your horse.
How to Store and Change Outfits from Your Horse:
- Store Outfits on Your Horse: When you’re at a wardrobe, select the outfit you want to store and choose the option to store it on your horse. You can store up to three outfits at a time.
- Equipping Outfits from Your Horse: To change outfits while traveling:
- Approach your horse and make sure it’s stationary.
- Hold the appropriate button to bring up the radial menu (L1 on PlayStation, LB on Xbox).
- Select the horse menu, then navigate to the “Outfits” section.
- Choose the outfit you want to wear.
This feature is especially handy when you need to switch outfits for different environments, such as switching to a warmer outfit in colder climates or a rugged look for wilderness exploration.
Additional Tips for Customizing Arthur’s Look
- Functional Clothing: Many clothing items serve practical purposes, such as offering protection against harsh weather conditions. For example, wearing a proper coat can help keep you warm in the colder regions of the game world.
- Mix and Match: Don’t be afraid to combine different clothing pieces to create a look that fits your playstyle. Sometimes, a unique combination can be even more stylish than a full outfit.
- Saving Outfits: Although Red Dead Redemption 2 doesn’t allow you to name saved outfits, you can still save several combinations for quick access. This makes it easier to switch between looks without having to recreate the outfit from scratch.
Arthur’s appearance is a big part of the Red Dead Redemption 2 experience, and knowing how to change outfits allows you to reflect your personal style while also providing the functionality needed for different environments. Whether you’re at camp, in town, or on the move, you’ll have plenty of options to keep Arthur looking sharp and prepared for any challenge.
By utilizing the wardrobe in your camp, renting rooms at hotels, or storing outfits on your horse, you’ll always be able to adjust your look as you see fit.

How to use the outfits on the horse?
How in the world do you roll up sleeves? I’m still pretty early in chapter 2 and haven’t learned how to do that. Every time I go in my wardrobe and try to do it, there’s no option for it. Am I missing something?
Whoa… you finished chapter 1 in two hours?!?! It took me a little over four and I felt like I was rushing kinda. How on earth did you finish in two? Most of it is a cut scene that you can’t even skip through.
