How to Fast Travel in RDR2 Story Mode

Red Dead Redemption 2 doesn’t hand you a fast travel system from the start — and it never really explains that one exists at all. If you’ve been riding everywhere on horseback and wondering why there’s no quick travel option on your map, you’re not alone. This guide covers every fast travel method available in RDR2 story mode, how to unlock them, what they cost, and the key limitations you need to know.

1. Trains — Fast Travel from Post Offices

You can buy a ticket for the train at the Post Office.
  • Available from: Chapter 2
  • Cost: Varies by distance
  • Requires prior visit: No

Train travel is the most flexible fast travel option in the early game because it doesn’t require you to have already visited a destination. You can buy a ticket to any station on the rail network from any Post Office, even if you’ve never been there before.

Post Offices are found in most major towns — look for the mail envelope icon on your map. Walk up to the clerk, select “Buy a train ticket,” and choose your destination. The further the stop, the more the ticket costs, but prices are generally low enough that it won’t strain your wallet.

How to Use Train Fast Travel

  1. Find a Post Office in any major town (look for the envelope icon on your map).
  2. Speak with the clerk and select Buy a train ticket.
  3. Choose your destination from the list of available stops.
  4. After a brief loading transition, you’ll arrive at your chosen station.

Train travel is one-way. Your horse will travel with you automatically, so you don’t need to worry about leaving it behind.

2. Stagecoaches — Fast Travel Between Towns

Interact with the Stagecoach sign in towns to travel between them.
  • Available from: Chapter 2
  • Cost: Varies by distance
  • Requires prior visit: Yes

Stagecoaches offer a slightly more limited version of fast travel — you can only travel to locations you’ve already discovered. They’re found in most towns and settlements, marked by a stagecoach icon on your map. Speak with the driver to see a list of available destinations.

The main advantage of stagecoaches over trains is availability — there are more stagecoach stops than train stations, so in smaller settlements without a Post Office, a stagecoach may be your only paid fast travel option.

How to Use Stagecoach Fast Travel

  1. Find a stagecoach in a town or settlement (look for the stagecoach icon on your map).
  2. Speak with the driver and select a destination from the list.
  3. Pay the fare and you’ll arrive at your destination after a short transition.

Unlike trains, you can only fast travel to locations you’ve previously visited by stagecoach. If a destination isn’t showing up, you need to discover it first.

3. Camp Fast Travel — Unlock via the Ledger

  • Available from: Chapter 2 (after Money Lending and Other Sins)
  • Cost: $545 in upgrades
  • Requires prior visit: Yes

This is the fast travel method most players are searching for — the ability to open a map at camp and travel to a location quickly, without paying for a ticket every time. It’s the closest thing RDR2 has to a traditional fast travel system, but it requires a one-time investment to unlock.

The key thing to understand before you start: camp fast travel is one-way only. You can travel from camp to a destination, but you cannot fast travel back to camp using this method. For that, see the Wilderness Camp section below.

How to Unlock Camp Fast Travel

If you upgrade Arthur’s tent, you can fast travel from it.

You need to complete two camp upgrades through the Ledger in sequence. The Ledger is the book sitting next to the donation box at camp — it becomes available after you complete the mission Money Lending and Other Sins from Leopold Strauss in Chapter 2, and donate money to the camp box.

  1. Complete Money Lending and Other Sins (Chapter 2 mission from Strauss). Recover at least one debt and donate the money to the camp lockbox.
  2. Open the Ledger — the book next to the donation box at camp.
  3. Navigate to Camp Upgrades and purchase Upgrade Dutch’s Tent ($220). This is a prerequisite — you cannot skip it.
  4. After purchasing Dutch’s upgrade, purchase Upgrade Arthur’s Tent ($325).
  5. Once Arthur’s Tent is upgraded, a Fast Travel Map will appear on the post beside Arthur’s bed at camp.

How to Use Camp Fast Travel

  1. Return to your gang’s camp.
  2. Walk to the Fast Travel Map on the post beside Arthur’s bed.
  3. Interact with it and select a previously visited location.
  4. You’ll fast travel there instantly — no loading screen, no ticket cost.

Total Cost: $545 ($220 for Dutch’s Tent + $325 for Arthur’s Tent). This is a one-time investment and the most cost-effective fast travel method in the long run. Check out our RDR2 money making guide if you need help raising the funds quickly.

4. Wilderness Camp — Fast Travel On the Go

  • Available from: Chapter 2 (via Ledger)
  • Cost: $325 upgrade + $0 per use
  • Requires prior visit: Yes

The Wilderness Camp solves the one problem the camp fast travel map can’t — getting back to camp when you’re out in the world. It’s also the only fast travel method that lets you travel to camp from a remote location.

To unlock it, open the Ledger at camp and purchase the Wilderness Outfitters upgrade under the Camp Upgrades section. Once purchased, you can set up a small camp anywhere in the wilderness using your item wheel.

How to Use the Wilderness Camp

  1. Open your Item Wheel (hold L1/LB) and navigate to the Camp option.
  2. Select Set Up Camp — Arthur will place a bedroll and campfire.
  3. Interact with the campfire and select Fast Travel.
  4. Choose a destination from the list of previously visited locations, including your main gang camp.

You can only set up a Wilderness Camp in open wilderness areas — not in towns, interiors, or during missions. If the option is greyed out, move further away from any settlement.

The most practical setup for most players is to unlock the Camp Fast Travel Map as early as possible in Chapter 2 — it removes the per-trip cost of trains and stagecoaches and makes returning to camp much less of a chore. Pair it with the Wilderness Camp upgrade and you’ll have a full two-way fast travel system for the rest of the game.

That said, don’t be too quick to fast travel everywhere. RDR2’s world is filled with random encounters, stranger missions, and discoverable locations that only trigger when you’re riding through the world. Some of the game’s most memorable moments happen between destinations.
