Dark Souls 3: Top Ten Weapons
5. Yhorm’s Great Machete
Location: Vanilla Dark Souls 3
Description: ” Great machete wielded long ago by Yhorm the Giant. Yhorm once lumbered on the frontlines with a greatshield. But one day, in place of his shield, a left-hand notch was added to his machete, enabling the smashing technique that would become the legacy of his later years. ”
I’m gonna come out and say it. Yhorm’s Great Machete is one of the best greatswords in Dark Souls 3 easily. The design is awesome, the way the weapon swings is amazing and the weapon art is pretty useful. I also absolutely love the lore around Yhorm and love that we can wield his great machete (I did a Yhorm playthrough… It was amazing). I would’ve put Yhorm’s Great Machete higher on the list, but the DLCs showered us with such amazing weapons that I simply couldn’t.
4. Ledo’s Great Hammer
Location: The Ringed City
Description: ” Great Hammer wielded by the Silver Knight Ledo. Ledo’s hammer is by far the heaviest weapon amongst those wielded by the knights of Anor Londo. Ledo, an eccentric who traveled across the outskirts, became a close friend to the giants and even Havel, the Rock. ”
I like ’em big. This has been the running mantra of my Dark Souls weapons experience and The Ringed City delivered. Dropped by the red phantom Silver Knight Ledo, Ledo’s Great Hammer is a giant hammer. This giant hammer is fourth on my list and rightfully so. The design is interesting (I get a Gyrm Great Hammer vibe), and the Weapon Art is awesome. Who doesn’t want a giant crystallized hammer? Ledo’s hammer is the best hammer in Dark Souls 3 easily.
3. Gundyr’s Halberd
Location: Vanilla Dark Souls 3
Description: ” Halberd of Gundyr the Champion, received when he was charged with his duty. This old cast-iron halberd has the power to break poise, and is said to never crumble, seeming to suggest that Gundyr was fated to eternal service from the beginning. “
Coming in at third on the list is the halberd wielded by Iudex Gundyr. Gundyr’s main duty is to ensure you are worthy to face the challenge ahead. To see this duty through, Gundyr wields the best halberd in the game. This halberd looks good, but also packs some serious punch. The halberd has a nice reach and has relatively quick attacks. This combination is especially deadly and can be used to put out some serious damage. When I faced Dark Souls 3’s tougher bosses, Gundyr’s Halberd was my go to.
2. Friede’s Great Scythe
Location: Ashes of Ariandel DLC
Description: ” A great scythe wielded by Sister Elfriede, with a curved blade thinly coated by Painted World frost that easily breaks the guard of shields. In the painting, the scythe is a symbol of a long-lost home, possibly explaining Elfriede’s preference for it. ”
I have never been much of a fan of Scythes in the Dark Souls series, but Friede’s Scythe changed that. When I first fought Friede I was blown away by the design of the weapon. From the cross slash to the jump attack, the weapon was interesting and different. Once I got my hands on the scythe I was blown away by the design as well as the Weapon Art. Friede’s Great Scythe is an amazing edition to the series and made me look at Scythes in a whole new light.
1. Gael’s Greatsword
Location: The Ringed City
Description: ” Greatsword of Slave Knight Gael, the only weapon that he kept with him from beginning to end. Originally an executioner’s sword made for decapitation, this blade is heavily chipped and stained with the blood of countless battles. ”
It is fitting that the last weapon in the game would be the top weapon on my list. Having defeated Gael in The Ringed City, I took the boss soul and transposed it into this beautiful weapon. The sword is interesting for a couple reason. First the Weapon Art is hands down the best of any weapon. The jump attack alone is incredible, but there is also a wicked dash as well. Second, the design of the weapon just strikes me as encompassing everything Dark Souls is about. The blade is worn and broken, but still manages to deal damage. Gael’s Greatsword also shares a striking similarity to the Broken Straight Sword which is another interesting design choice. Overall, I just love this weapon and the fact it is the ‘last’ weapon you get in the series.
