September 2022 Video Game Releases to Be Excited For
If you’re like me you’ve been in a bit of a video game slumber of late due to the rather light release schedule. August 2022 was a fairly underwhelming month for new games with top the highlights being the mediocre Saints Row reboot. Thankfully, September 2022 is a bit more action packed. Let’s take a look at the major September 2022 video game releases to get excited for.
LEGO Brawls (September 2)
When people think of brawler video games most think of Nintendo’s Super Smash series. Given the massive success of Smash many companies have now entered the fray. Recently Warner Bros. released MultiVersus and now LEGO is getting in on the action as well with LEGO Brawls.
LEGO Brawls is a free-to-play team brawler out of developers Red Games Co. and publisher LEGO Games. The game features 4v4 action where teams fight to control certain objects at the center of each map. In typical LEGO fashion players can create their own characters using a wide variety of customization items earned in-game.
LEGO Brawls first released on Apple Arcade back in September 19, 2019. The September 2nd release sees it launch on PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One & Series X|S, and PlayStation 4/5.
The Last of Us Part I (September 5)
It’s been 9 years since Naughty Dog released The Last of Us. Following the commercial success of that release the studio remastered the title with better graphics and graphical options. Now the studio is back once again with a remake of the beloved 2013 title.
The Last of Us Part I is a remake of The Last of Us. It is not to be confused with the remaster. In the remake Naughty Dog has rebuilt the original title with modern graphics, improved accessibility, and improved controls.
What’s missing from the remake version is the online component which the studio has opted not to include this time around. The Last of Us Part I is available on September 5.
NBA 2K23 (September 9)
The hardwood is back again this year with NBA 2K23. This year’s edition of the game features a serious tribute to Michael Jordan who wore the 23 jersey number during his playing career. To celebrate Jordan the game is reviving The Jordan Challenge which was first introduced back in 2011. This game mode allows players to relive 15 critical moments in Michael Jordan’s career including playing in moments like the ‘Flu Game.’
Alongside the focus on Jordan there are some other new changes in this year’s edition of the NBA 2K. MyTEAM is seeing the removal of Contracts, the W game mode is more flushed out this year, and MyNBA allows players to play through a variety of what if scenarios across different eras in the NBA.
NBA 2K23 release date is September 9 for Xbox Series X and Series S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PC. Note that the PC version is not next-gen, only the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are.
Splatoon 3 (September 9)
Splatoon 3 marks the return of the popular “Inkling” vs “Octoling” third-person ink shooter from Nintendo. This third entry in the series features both PvP and PvE multiplayer content alongside a single-player mode called Return of the Mammalians which is set in a new location called “Alterna.” Splatoon 3 inks its way onto the Nintendo Switch on September 9.
Return to Monkey Island (September 19)
One of the more surprising announcements this year was made by Devolver Digital. The publishers revealed that the Monkey Island point-and-click adventure series was getting a new series entry called Return to Monkey Island helmed by series creator Ron Gilbert.
Return to Monkey Island is the sixth entry in the Monkey Island series and takes place following the events of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge (though it is not a sequel to it). It is said to be a wrap up to the 30-year old series. Return to Monkey Island release on September 19 for Nintendo Switch and PC.
